Auto Insurance Liability Coverage Requirements

In the state of North Carolina, the Vehicle Financial Responsibility Act of 1957 requires that all vehicles that are registered with the state be covered by an auto liability policy. The policy must be effectual and present ongoing coverage until a person terminates his or her vehicle's registration with the state.
In order to register vehicles in North Carolina, people must present proof of insurance to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). People may provide their insurance company's name with their policy number. Or, people may present a Certificate of Insurance (FS-1), which they can obtain from their insurance company.
The state also has minimum liability requirements:
§ $30,000 minimum for a private passenger vehicle for bodily injury for one person
§ $60,000 minimum for two or more people
§ $25,000 minimum to cover property damage
Often times, when people are involved in auto accidents, they wonder if their insurance company will cover their injuries and property damage.
