Woman Died from Blood Loss after Dog Bites
In Ida Grove, IA, local authorities have revealed after an autopsy that an elderly woman actually bled to death after being attacked and bitten by her German shepherd.
According to Ida County Sheriff Wade Harriman, law enforcement officers responded to the residence of 79-year-old Shirley Lou Bird on Monday after they were contacted by her nephew. Her nephew told police that he had not been able to reach his aunt for numerous days.
When police arrived at the residence, they found the body of Bird which had several bite marks. One bite mark was deep and located on her arm.
Authorities have reason to believe that Bird suffered several dog bites by her five-year-old German shepherd and she had gone to her bathroom to try to stop the bleeding. However, after an autopsy was performed, it was determined that the elderly woman died from blood loss.
Following her death, the dog was euthanized.
