Pedestrian Seriously Injured during Accident
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is reporting that a Stokes man was seriously injured Thursday night when he was hit by a car. Trooper M.M. Kongs said the man injured in the pedestrian accident, Edward Thomas Elks, 38, was hit by a Ford Aerostar van while he was walking with traffic in the early evening.
The driver of the van that hit Elks, Peggy Langley, 51, said her vision became impaired by the oncoming headlights of another vehicle. She also said that it was dark and that Elks was wearing dark clothing.
Commenting on the accident, Langley said, "People have to understand, when they are walking on the road, they have to walk against the traffic, not with it."
Ealks was transported to Pitt Cuonty Memorial Hospital where he was treated for broken bones and a hurt elbow. Langley was attended to by Bethel EMS at the scene, but she suffered no apparent injuries. Charges are not expected to be filed against Langley, according to local police.
