Intersection Hot Spot for Pedestrian Accidents
Even though an intersection in Raleigh has had four pedestrian accidents - two of them fatal - since 2000, a city transportation engineer still doubts changes will ever be made.
Another accident on Sunday morning adds to the list of incidents at Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Chavis Way. The most recent pedestrian accident involved 18-year-old Raul Gutierrez-Leija hitting Freddie Lane, 46, with his vehicle.
To add insult to injury, Gutierrez-Leija was also charged with driving without a license, DWI, provisional DWI, as well as an open container violation. Since the intersection was created in 2000 there have been 106 car accidents; thirty of those have been in the past three years alone. Even though those numbers are high, the intersection doesn't make the Department of Transportation's list of most dangerous intersections.
The bond for Gutierrez-Leija was set at $10,000. He is currently being held by Immigration Customs and Enforcement Agency to see whether he is in this country legally.
