Two Drunk Drivers Cause Fatal Accident
In Gaston County, police from the North Carolina Highway Patrol are reporting that two drunk drivers caused a serious car accident which killed one driver and sent five people, including four children, to local hospitals throughout the state.
Police say that the drunk driving accident occurred just before seven a clock p.m. on Tryon Courthouse Road which is near Cherryville.
According to one trooper, 29-year-old David Cleary was intoxicated when he hit another driver who also happened to be under the influence. Clearly allegedly sped across the road's center line and hit a pickup truck head-on and died at the scene of the accident due to his injuries.
After the collision, three children had to be taken to the intensive care unit at Carolinas Medical Center and a fourth child was sent to Cleveland Regional Hospital. Cleary's fiancée was also involved in the accident and listed as being in serious condition on Sunday evening.
The other driver involved was Richard Ray McDonald and he has since been charged with DWI after suffering serious injuries.
