The NC Safety Inspection Program & Traffic Accidents: Is there a correlation?
As one of the 16 states that requires vehicles to pass through an annual safety inspection program, residents in North Carolina are paying nearly $86 million each year to help support this program. However, is this inspection process actually preventing traffic accidents?
The safety checks, conducted by AAA and evaluated by the DMV, require vehicles under 35 years old to complete these tests. Each test cost drivers $13.60, while an emissions test, which may or may not be necessary for all cars, may increase the cost to $30.
In a recent study reported on by NBC, however, it has been found that there is no sufficient evidence to support the claim that these tests are reducing traffic accidents. The reports note that there was not enough dating correlating traffic accidents and safety inspections; therefore it cannot determine if the program is effective.
