About Event Data Recorders

While these little "black boxes" are not installed in every vehicle, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that in 2008, 65 to 90 percent of all vehicles have them, including virtually all new cars.

What do these EDRs, as they are called in short, actually do? The black box inside your car records data, including how fast you are driving, if you're wearing your seatbelt and when you're braking. While it only records this information and stores it for a few seconds at a time, a car accident will change everything.

After a collision is detected, these black boxes remember much more.

An EDR can collect very specific details such as the change in forward crash speed, how far the accelerator pedal was pressed, whether the brake was applied, whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt, whether the frontal air bag warning lamp was on, and whether the EDR completed recording.

According to resources, the NHTSA is enforcing all vehicles built after 2013 to have a standardized EDR to record this information in the event of an acciden.

Some insurance companies will use this to find out if the accident actually occurred the way in which was described by the victims, or if the whiplash they have claimed is severe enough for compensation.

Being involved in a personal injury accident such as an auto accident can be a devastating time in a person's life. While technological advances are giving us the opportunity to understand car accidents and the causes, there are still many questions and concerns an accident victim will have.
