Road Safety Measures Suggested for NC 751

As many North Carolina residents can attest, the stretch of road on N.C. 751 nearby Duke's campus can prove to be a dangerous and sometimes fatal area for drivers.

Fortunately, earlier this month the North Carolina Department of Transportation proposed additional road safety measures to prevent these types of auto accidents from occurring.

The NCDOT recommended that additional signage be placed along that stretch of highway in an area known locally as Academy Road, where the road winds into a particularly sharp curve.

The memo stated that the single chevron sign inside the curve be replaced by two more, outside of the curve to alert drivers of the curve sooner. It was also suggested that an object marker be added to the 35 miles per hour speed limit sign near the intersection of Cranford Road.

The most recent fatal accident at this curve occurred in September, when a passenger in a car was killed after the vehicle was traveling around 65 miles per hour, went off the path and hit a tree.
