Social Security Benefits to Raise in January

The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% raise in benefits to be effective in January of 2012. This is the first raise in two years, and much needed by many Americans struggling with disabilities.

While the much needed rise in benefits will have an advantage for every party involved, many say it still will not be enough.

Beginning in January 2012, the 55 million recipients of Social Security benefits will get increased benefits averaging around $39 a month. Starting in December, over 8 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income will get an increase averaging $18 a month.

Much of the older population that is being affected by the tough economy and the low payout by the Social Security Disability program is forced to go out and seek employment, even at ages of 70 plus.

These people have been noted to be struggling for some time, cutting back on many of the luxuries that the younger working class enjoys and have even began to rack up debt on their credit cards.

For those in the upper class of the elderly, they are aware and grateful for the increase in Social Security benefits as well. Even those living off of savings and investments can now have a little extra padding simply for a "rainy day."
