When the roundabout was placed at Hillsborough and Pullen last year, traffic engineers in Raleigh expected a slight increase in car accidents.
However, as the results and accident reports have shown, this number is much higher than many of them would have predicted.
The steady increase of the accidents at the roundabout is alarming, to say the least.
Between December 21, 2007 and July 1, 2008, before construction of the roundabout took place, only three low-severity crashes took place.
However between the months of July 2010 and May 15, 2011, 60 low-severity car accidents were noted on record.
Though engineers expected there to be a learning curve for the residents to understand the roundabout and become more familiar with the rules, it seems that the car accident rate continues to remain high.
There is a silver lining however to these accidents. No one was seriously injured in any accident, though damages to vehicles have put many in uncomfortable financial situations. However, the nature of the roundabout keeps vehicles moving at slow speeds, keeping injuries and damages to a minimum.
