Nursing Home in Torrington Fined for Choking Death

In Torrington, Connecticut one nursing home facility is being fined for the death of a patient that choked on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in February. Torrington Health and Rehabilitation Center is being held responsible for the choking accident of one of its residents who was reportedly left unattended during a meal in which they choked on the food that was provided to them. Despite strict requirements that the patient be monitored during meal times, inspectors with the state Department of Public Health have ruled that the facility's staff members failed to remain by the patient's side as directed.
Now, less than two months later, the facility is being fined for its acts of nursing home negligence. The Public Health Department has ordered that a plan be submitted which indicates the facility's intention for correction of the matter as well. Incidents of nursing home abuse and neglect occur far too often, and facilities throughout the state have been found to be the culprits of such inappropriate attention and/ or inaction. When this is the case, the ones to suffer are the elderly patients themselves.
