December Crash Caused by State Trooper Under Investigation
A car accident that occurred on December 18, 2011, is still under investigation by the state after information has been revealed that the trooper who caused the accident may have been traveling at excessive speeds. According to state law, a trooper who is responding to an emergency call and is travelling faster than the posted speed limit must use sirens and blue lights. The trooper who caused the accident was not following this rule. Without sirens or blue lights, the North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper may have been driving between 80 and 105 miles per hour when his vehicle rear ended an SUV that had just made a legal U-turn. The posted speed limit in the area is 55 miles per hour. According to police reports and illustrations, the driver of the SUV would not have been able to see the speeding trooper coming around a curve. The reports also noted that the accident left skid marks on the road that were 58 feet long. The investigation is ongoing and will determine the appropriate disciplinary action for the trooper.
