| Researchers Develop Brain Injury Questionnaire for Soldiers |
| Posted By Whitley Law Firm |
 |
In New York, it has been reported that researchers from the United States have developed an extensive questionnaire that will help soldiers who are serving in war learn if they need to be treated for traumatic brain injury (TBI).
According to Wayne Gordon of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, the questionnaire was used as a screening tool for soldiers returning from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who participated in the Sixth Annual Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute which was held in Orlando, Florida.
The newly developed Brain Injury Screening Questionnaire includes questions on whether a blow to the head was incurred that cause unconsciousness, confusion or disorientation. Other questions are related to sleep disturbances, memory disturbances and difficulty concentrating. After answering the questions included in the questionnaire the participants receive a computer generated report. Those who are determined to be at risk for TBI are told to seek further evaluation from a qualified physician which can deter further complications associated with brain injuries.
If you or someone you love has suffered a TBI, now is the time to contact our legal team to discuss your situation with an understanding Raleigh personal injury attorney.

| World Health Organization Releases Brain Injury Statistics |
| Posted By Whitley Law Firm |
 |
In 1993, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its adopted standards for the surveillance of central nervous system injury. The following are the findings.
In the United States, approximately one million people are treated and released from hospital emergency departs as a result of traumatic brain injury.
Out of the many people that experience traumatic brain injury every year, about 230,000 people are hospitalized and survive, while nearly 50,000 people die.
Of the patients released, 80,000 people are estimated to be discharged from a hospital with some traumatic brain injury-related disability. In total, close to 5.3 million Americans are living today with a disability related to traumatic brain injury.
Studies have found that the highest rate of injury occurs among people between the ages of 15-24 years. However, it is important to note that persons under the age of 5 and over the age of 75 are also at higher risk of traumatic brain injury.

| Study Shows Epilepsy is Common Post Traumatic Symptom of Brain Injuries |
| Posted By Whitley Law Firm |

A new study is reporting that soldiers who have suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBI) have a higher risk of epilepsy decades after they sustained their injuries. On July 20, 2010, the print issue of Neurology (a medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology) published the research study.
The author of the study, Jordan Grafman, PhD, said, "Given the better chances of survival in soldiers fighting in conflicts today, our research suggests that all veterans with a traumatic brain injury should be routinely screened for post-traumatic epilepsy, even decades after the injury." Dr. Grafman works at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Maryland.
The journal says that post-traumatic epilepsy is the most common cause of new-onset epilepsy amongst adults. Each year, 30,000 cases of epilepsy are reported in the USA.
During the research phase of the study, 199 veterans who had suffered brain injuries 35 years prior were asked whether or not they had experienced a seizure. They also went through scans to detect brain lesions. Of the 199, 44% had developed post-traumatic epilepsy. The study also showed that the types of seizure the soldiers suffered change over time, usually becoming more severe and even leading to loss of consciousness.

| Hypoxic Anoxic Brain Injuries |
| Posted By Whitley Law Firm |
 |
Did you know that your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that is ingested by your body? The oxygen supplied to the brain is used to send signals to other parts of your body, controlling essential functions like breathing. Anytime oxygen is completely or partially cut off from the brain, people may suffer hypoxic-anoxic injuries.
Whenever there are reduced oxygen levels, the brain's ability to function may become impaired and so too will bodily functions. Sadly, people may suffer hypoxic-anoxic brain injuries from numerous things, including gunshot wounds to the head, birth injuries or even blunt force trauma.
After people have sustained hypoxic-anoxic brain injuries, they may develop symptoms like: lack of coordination, abnormal physical movements, weakness in body parts, paralysis and quadriplegia. Victims who have suffered these types of brain injuries may also find that it is difficult to follow instructions.
If you or someone you love has suffered a brain injury due to lack of oxygen and you believe negligence was involved, now is the time to contact the Whitley Law Firm and speak with a North Carolina personal injury lawyer.

There are two types of brain injuries that people may suffer: traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and non-traumatic brain injuries. While both types can be devastating for individual sufferers and their families, those that suffer TBIs develop symptoms that may not only be permanent in nature, but life-threatening.
When people have sustained traumatic brain injuries, they may experience the following symptoms: memory loss, slurred speech, immobility, loss of digestive functions, loss of respiratory functions, insomnia, mood swings and persistent pain.
As you can imagine, these symptoms can disrupt a person's quality of life indefinitely, which is why people who have sustained TBIs due to other people's negligence are allowed to file claims in the state of North Carolina. By filing claims, brain injury sufferers may be able to collect monetary damages for their medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
If you or someone you love has suffered a brain injury due to the negligence of a third party, contact the Whitley Law Firm today and set up a time to speak with a Raleigh personal injury lawyer.
