Department of Labor Releases Worker Death and Injury Figures
Posted By Whitley Law Firm

In Raleigh, statistics showed that 48 people died on the job in the state of North Carolina last year compared to 34 work related deaths in 2009. The statistics were recently released by the state's Department of Labor.

According to the figures, the leading cause of work related fatalities in the year 2010 were workers being hit by a vehicle or an object. Sixteen workers were killed as a result of being struck.  Additionally, fifteen workers died during falls, nine were crushed by objects and four died from electrocution.

Statistics also indicate that fifteen of the workers that were killed were employed within the construction industry and six were in the manufacturing and service industries.

Despite the deaths reported, figures show that injury and illness rates are at an all-time low for private industries.  This rate has slowly decreased from 5.3 per 100 full time employees in 2000 to 3.1 per 100 full time employees in 2009.

If you were injured on the job and have questions about your legal options or worker's compensation, contact the Whitley Law Firm to discuss your situation with a Raleigh personal injury attorney now.

  Worker Killed at Recycling Center
Posted By Whitley Law Firm

In Raleigh, the North Carolina Labor Department recently confirmed that a man who was 39 years old was killed while working at a recycling facility in North Carolina.

The accident led to the death of Simon Martinez took place on Wednesday night.  According to a spokesperson for Sonoco, no one saw the accident when it occurred.  However, the North Carolina Labor Department says that Martinez was operating a forklift, but was not on the forklift when the incident took place.

This is the second death at the recycling facility in just a two month period.  In the month of August, a man operating a forklift at a Sonoco in Salisbury was hurt after he was crushed by 1,600 pounds of baled cardboard.

In October 2008, after an inspection, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration served the facility in Raleigh with six violations.  Three of the violations were reported to be serious.

If you were injured on the job and would like information about worker's compensation, contact the Whitley Law Firm to get advice from a Raleigh personal injury lawyer.
